Each child is unique in the way he/she absorbs, processes, comprehends and retains information.

A child’s learning style is his/her approach to learning based on strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Every child has a combination of learning styles but usually there is one which is predominant.

There are many theories related to learning styles but as a single parent, I always go for what is simple and straight forward. Basically, learning styles could be broken down into three major categories:

  • Visual: processing information with eyes. Visual learners learn fast what they see(read/write).
  • Auditory: processing information through ears. Auditory learners learn fast what they listen.
  • Kinesthetic: processing formation by doing. Kinetic learners learn fast what they can touch or replicate themselves.

Here are the 2 reasons why it is so important to know the learning style of your child:

  1. Knowing the learning style of your child is critical to make better informed decisions regarding your child’s learning path: with COVID 19 pandemic, parents are more than ever challenged as they have to provide both academic knowledge and at-home education to their kids. A lot of decision should be made to choose the right tools, to develop the lessons schedule and plan, etc. For single parents especially, this is really difficult, as they are online to take care of many other responsibilities. They need supporting tools to help them keep the learning progress of their kids on track. Online learning platforms, for example, are great supporting tools but still, parents need to choose the best one that addresses the needs of their kid (use this checklist to select the right online website for your children).  Kids need to practice in order to keep the knowledge gained at school: which exercises to choose, how to define an effective lesson schedule, which resources to better address the learning needs of your kid. To make the better choices you really need to know what the learning style of your child is.
  2. Knowing the learning style of your child allows you to understand his/her limitations and strengths and better communicate: knowing the limitations, you may understand better where his/her challenges are and you can better support him. Sometimes parents lose patience, and that may affect the learning progress of their kids. Children are very sensitive and an inadequate language, either verbal or nonverbal, could create stress and frustration that could affect their willingness to learn and their ability to reach their full potential. Using the best approach to communicate with your kids improve their confidence and trust in themselves.

As parents, it is essential to understand how to adapt the learning approach and the communication tools for better results with our kids.
